Cult florist Boutierre Girl's Em Belling on the title she devoured between Christmas and New Years

At Summer Stories, we've asked our favourite changemakers for their best summer read, like Em Belling of Boutierre Girls.

Em, tell us how you spend your days.

I manage the accounts and operations here at Boutierre Girls. If clients get in touch via email, it’ll probably be me that replies!

So tell us about your favourite summer read.

My favourite read this summer was Clare Bowditch's Your Own Kind of Girl. I wouldn't have bought it for myself as I don't really follow Clare's music, but I got it for Christmas and was sucked in straight away!

She has a true gift for storytelling; I opened to the first page just to get a sense of the book's tone and didn't put it down for a couple of hours. Clare's funny, raw, touching tale of her own journey with mental health and her creative process was moving and joyful – a celebration of being human in this weird and wonderful world! I was at home on the couch when I read it... in that lovely downtime between Christmas and New Year. Perfect for the self-reflection that this book prompts.

This is possibly a tough question as you work with flowers but do you have a favourite Australian bloom?

LOL I first said proteas because of their firm fluffiness and different colours… but
Em Smith told me they’re actually South African! For an actual Australian flower, I
love banksias… again they feel really cool! .

Thanks so much Em. 🌸
