Vogel Award winner Belinda Castles on Min Jin Lee's Pachinko

At Summer Stories, we've asked our favourite authors and changemakers for their best summer story.

“Last summer I read Pachinko by Min Jin Lee on our family holiday to the South Coast of New South Wales. While the kids dug holes and built sand sculptures, I lay in a sun shelter and read about a Korean family’s experience of terrible hardship and prejudice in Japan over the course of the twentieth century. It’s an absolutely gripping story of resilience and courage, and a very moving way to spend the best reading days of the year.”

Belinda Castles is the award-winning author of Bluebottle, Hannah and Emil and The River Baptists. She lives in Sydney and likes to disappear down the coast every summer with a stack of brilliant novels.
